Legislative Studies and Commissions

When addressing complex challenges through legislation, the General Assembly frequently establishes a study or commission to conduct a more thorough analysis of the subject matter. The following are the staffed Commissions with offices on or around Capitol Square. Detailed listings of all studies and commissions can be found on the General Assembly Studies page.

Behavioral Health Commission

Studies and makes recommendations for the improvement of behavioral health services and the behavioral health service system in the Commonwealth.

Chesapeake Bay Commission

Assists legislatures of Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania in evaluating and responding to problems of mutual concern relating to the Chesapeake Bay.

Commission on Youth

Studies and provides recommendations addressing the needs of and services to the Commonwealth’s youths and their families.

Crime Commission

Studies, reports and makes recommendations on all areas of public safety and protection.

Disability Commission

Identifies and recommends legislative priorities and policies to provide ongoing support in developing and reviewing services and funding related to Virginians with physical and sensory disabilities.

Electric Utility Regulation Commission

Monitors the State Corporation Commission’s implementation of the Virginia Electric Utility Regulation Act.

Freedom of Information Advisory Council

Encourages and facilitates compliance with the Freedom of Information Act.

Joint Commission on Health Care

Studies, reports and makes recommendations on all areas of health care provision, regulation, insurance, liability, licensing, and delivery of services.

Joint Commission on Technology and Science

Studies all aspects of technology and science, and strives to encourage, promote, and assist in the development of sound technology and science policy in the Commonwealth.

Virginia Housing Commission

Studies and provides recommendations to ensure and foster the availability of safe, sound, and affordable housing for every Virginian.
