All members of the General Assembly are elected by qualified voters within their respective Senate and House of Delegates districts. The 40 members of the Senate serve four-year terms and the 100 members of the House serve two-year terms.
Qualifications for Senators and Delegates are defined in the Constitution of Virginia. Persons elected to the Senate of Virginia and Virginia House of Delegates must be twenty-one years of age, a resident of the district they are seeking to represent, and qualified to vote for members of the General Assembly. A senator or delegate who moves their residence from the district for which elected shall thereby vacate the office.
Members of the General Assembly may not hold any other elected public office during their term of office.
The Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and Attorney General are statewide elected officials who serve four-year terms.
