Tour the Capitol on Your Own

Visitors are welcome to explore the Virginia State Capitol at their own pace during regular operating hours. A self-guiding brochure and map are available to help you navigate the Capitol and Capitol Square, highlighting nearby buildings and historic monuments.

Inside the Capitol, self-guided visitors may explore:

  • The Old House and Old Senate Chambers
  • The Rotunda, home to presidential statuary
  • The Jefferson Room, located on the second floor of the original 1788 Capitol

Please note: The present-day House and Senate Chambers, located in the east and west wings, may only be visited with a Capitol guide. However, during legislative sessions, visitors are welcome to observe proceedings from the public galleries, accessible from the mezzanine levels.

Additional highlights include the Governor’s Gallery on the third floor, which displays portraits of the last 16 Governors of Virginia. From this gallery, visitors can also enjoy a close view of the Capitol’s historic rotunda dome beneath the A-line roof.
