Committee Information
Upon introduction, all bills and many resolutions are referred to a committee. The Clerk of the Senate refers bills and resolutions introduced in the Senate of Virginia. The Speaker of the House refers bills and resolutions introduced in the Virginia House of Delegates.
Virginia House of Delegates Committees
The House of Delegates has 14 committees. Members are assigned to committees by the Speaker of the House. A listing of current committee membership with the regularly scheduled meeting times is available. During any legislative session, notices of meetings that include the proposed agenda are available on the House Committee page as well as on the Legislative Information System (LIS). Citizens can also follow House committees and subcommittees on Twitter, or register to receive email notifications from the individual Committee pages. Users can now see all Virginia House of Delegates Meeting Video Streams using a new calendar-driven interface (https://vga.virginia.gov/hv).
House of Delegates Sub-Committees
As dictated in the Rules of the House of Delegates, the chairman of any standing committee may appoint subcommittees, which must consist of no fewer than five members. House subcommittee information, consisting of membership, legislation referral, meeting information, and meeting agendas, are available from each standing committee page on the Legislative Information System (LIS).
Legislative Studies and Commission Groups
When trying to create legislation that solves complex challenges, it may be necessary to perform a legislative study or create a commission to deal with subject matter. Such studies and the commissions that carry out research for them along with other public outreach projects often meet on Capitol Square. An online listing of each commission and study is available.
